How to Crash Your Company on Facebook

Imagine your company is a plane - one of those big new Boeing Dreamliners.

You have 250+ passengers who are hanging on every word you, as the captain, say. You are who they get their information from on the flight. You are their main point of contact involving their business transaction with you on this journey.

Now imagine you aren’t certified to fly this type of plane, meaning you’re now putting the relationship you have with your 250+ passengers at risk.

Scary, huh?

This is the same thing you are doing by running your business on Facebook through a personal page. Not only are you flying the wrong kind of craft for the journey you have asked your 250+ customers and fans to join you on, you are breaking the very clear rules Facebook made you agree to when you signed up.

Facebook will crash your plane for you and you will lose all of your passengers, relationships, and content. And they won’t care one bit as you were the rule-breaker. You rebel, you.

Here in our local market in Mid-Missouri, I know of many businesses running the risk of getting their Facebook profiles crashed. These include popular nightclubs, very large car dealerships, and even some of our loyal competition. Some have a few “friends,” and some have more than 1,000.

In Section 4.4 of the Facebook terms of service you agreed to when you signed up, it clearly states: “You will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain.”

If you are a business, a charity, or a celebrity of some note, you need to go to Facebook.com/Pages and begin the short process of setting up a page for your efforts.

When you have your logo, hours, contact info, etc. set up, you then should go to Facebook.com/UserName and claim the vanity URL you need for your venture. After you have 25 fans for your page this will become your name and you will be much easier for your customers to find on Facebook.

There is more, a lot more, to having success on Facebook than just setting up your Page correctly. We will be covering more of those points in future posts.

Still have questions? Hit our contact page above and ask us. We’ll be glad to help.

Now buckle up, get your trays in the upright position, and get those customers delivered to your new Facebook Page!
